An important anniversary in Gubbio

On the 22d of June, as every year, an act of commemoration was held in Gubbio in memory of the the massacre of the  “40 martyrs”.
On that date in 1944, following the killing of a Wehrmacht officer,  40 civilians were rounded up and shot in retaliation. These events left the city divided and traumatised. But in 2004, a great story of reconciliation began. Read on….
In 2004, the daughter of one of the 40 victims, Guglielmina Roncigli, met the son of the murdered German officer, Peter Staudacher, and their meeting led to a long and sincere correspondence. The author Giacomo Marinelli Andreoli has written a book, “Nel segno dei padri” about their friendship. Its primary message is the recognition that only when errors on both sides of a conflict are acknowledged can true reconciliation take place.
In the book, Peter Staudacher describes himself and Guglielmina as “two lost children, now old, who meet after a long life to seek reconciliation.” For her part,  Guglielmina writes: ” When you are ready, and if you wish it, we can work together to make our contribution, and to make it clear that only through mutual understanding, forgiveness and dialogue can we do justice to the past and build a true peace for the future.”

Our first eFriends in-person meeting!

Simon Maylor, our Facebook guru, was one of the first members of Twinning to take advantage of the offer of an eFriends  ‘penpal’. Three years on, their cyber-friendship has blossomed into the real thing! Simon and Charlotte have diverted from their holiday in Italy to drive across the Gubbio to meet their friends in person. Here are some lovely  photos of their meeting, and some of Simon’s pictures of beautiful Gubbio:

Ukrainian refugees in Gubbio.

It has been an eventful month for the Twinning Association in Gubbio. They have a number of Ukrainian refugees staying in the town, and recently organised a walking tour to introduce their guests to the beauties of the town and its history.

Thankyou to Matilde from the Associazione Gubbio Gemellagi for sending these photos.

Malcolm Lyons

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our Chairman, Malcolm Lyons, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday 3rd March. Our thoughts are with Trish and the rest of his family at this very sad time.

Malcolm was Chairman of HGTA for many years. He was tireless in devoting time and effort into promoting Twinning here in Huntingdon and Godmanchester, and in developing a rapport with all four of our Twin Towns; he was instrumental in the formal twinning with Gubbio in 2013.

He will be greatly missed.

It’s Christmas in our Twin Towns!

Despite the anxieties related to Covid and the restrictions which are being imposed in many countries, we and our twin towns have all made brave efforts to celebrate the Christmas season with beautiful decorations and Christmas markets. Here is a small selection of the many photographs which we have received – with thanks to all the photographers:

Huntingdon/Godmanchester: David King, Alan Hooker, Steve McAdam, Wertheim: Manfred Lutz, Gubbio: Matilde, Salon de Provence: Office du Tourisme

Salon de Provence: In addition to the stunning Christmas lights, especially the light show on the Hôtel de Ville, Salon also has a big fun fair at this time of year.

Wertheim: The traditional Christmas market can’t take place because of the pandemic but there are some stalls outside the old town centre selling craft products. Merry Christmas and Frohe Weihnachten from Wertheim.

Gubbio A word of explanation from Matilde: These images show the huge Christmas Tree in lights, and some of the life size statues which appear throughout the San Martino district, the heart of the medieval city, as a Nativity scene. Along the ancient alleys, across the bridge and along the riverside there are reconstructions of shops, activities and crafts typical of medieval Gubbio. Buon Natale!

Remembrance Sunday, 14th November 2021

Huntingdon and Godmanchester marked Remembrance Sunday in the traditional fashion, with Services of Remembrance at the towns’ war memorials. Many members of the public turned out in force in both towns to participate in the Act of Remembrance and to stand in silent reflection for two minutes at 11am.  The Last Post and Reveille were played, flags were dipped, and wreaths were laid.

HGTA was represented in Huntingdon by Malcolm Lyons, David King, and James Fell, who laid the HGTA wreath.

In Godmanchester, a shower of poppies preceded the wreath-laying. Nan Taplin laid a wreath on behalf of HGTA. There was also a church service in the evening, at which the names of the fallen in two world wars were read aloud.

SOcial COnnections (SoCo) with Wertheim

There have now been five SoCo meetings, organised by Gesine deVere and the Wertheim sub-committee. These are social events for twinners who have a particular interest in our German twin town of Wertheim. The first three meetings were hosted by Gesine in her lovely garden (and accompanied by her even lovelier cakes and scones!). SoCo 4 was at Frosts Garden Centre, and SoCo 5 saw us in the Queen Elizabeth School in Godmanchester, where Dick Taplin gave a very interesting illustrated talk about the Harz Mountains. You can see more details about each of the events on the relevant ‘Events’ pages, but here is a quick recap of what we have been up to since the summer.

SoCo 1 July 7th

SoCo 2 August 4th

SoCo 3 September 1st

SoCo 4 October 6th

SoCo 5 November 3rd

The next SoCo event will be on Wednesday December 1st at 1.30pm at the Grand Piano café in Godmanchester. Please contact Gesine deVere if you would like to attend.

It’s truffle time in Gubbio!

This weekend sees the 35th National Exhibition of White Truffles and Agro-food Products being held in the Piazza Grande, Gubbio. This event is organised by the Upper Umbria Mountain Community. The mayor and the Municipal Manager, Ubaldo Casoli, opened the festival and over 40 exhibitors from all over Italy are taking part. There is a focus on recipes that combine street food with Italian food specialities, the festival providing a showcase for gastronomy celebrating the ‘King of the Table’. The price of the truffles ranges from 700 Euros per kg for black and 1200 for the white up to an astonishing 5,000 Euros per kg! Thanks to our friend Matilde in Gubbio for the photos and the information.
